Tumco Jan 20th - 22nd. 6 to 18 deg Sunny windy

The trip to Tumco, ( The United Mining Company ), took an hour and a half Salton Sea.
We have been here before and there were other campers here then, maybe a dozen or so. This time we are all alone. We have double checked and camping is allowed. We found a nice spot and got set up. Some history I found on the net.

Hedges began as the Gold Rock mining camp, that grew up around the Gold Rock Mine discovered by Peter Walters in 1884. He soon thereafter sold out to developers who renamed the mine the Golden Cross in 1892. In 1893, Golden Cross Mining and Milling Company began a development program bringing in a stamp mill to work the ore in the local mines. The camp grew into a town amidst the mines, named Hedges, in honor of the firm's vice president C. L. Hedges. The town was renamed Tumco in 1910, for The United Mines Company, the company that bought the Gold Cross mining company from its previous owners. The Tumco Mine operated from 1892 until 1917, and again from 1937 until 1942. The town in the late 1800s had a population of several thousand by 1942 it only had 30.[3]

There is very little left, not much to see, other than a grave yard. The day we got here it was absolutely beautiful, sunny and warm, maybe a as light breeze. Some photos of the area as the sun set.

The sun set.

In the middle of the night, the wind picked up and howled all night and the next day, we just sat around and read. Judging by the scowl on their faces, they are not impressed with the picture taking or the wind.

Next day the wind slowed down and we got out for a walk. Some pictures of the surrounding area.

We were going to stay for 4 nights but with the wind, we are going to head for Yuma area. It is only half an hour from here.
